Book

Structure and Substance situates Garland’s work within the development of graphic design in mid twentieth-century Britain. The book features an extensive biographical essay by Adrian Shaughnessy, which is accompanied by rare personal photographs, touching on the many sides of Garland: the ethical and political designer; the writer; the teacher; the photographer. It is underpinned by interviews with his contemporaries and peers.

The book covers Garland’s long career from student exercises at the Central School of Arts in the 1950s (where fellow students included Alan Fletcher, Derek Birdsall and Ken Briggs) and early work on Design magazine, to the many client projects completed with Ken Garland & Associates from 1962 onwards, including work for Galt Toys, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and Keniston Housing Association.

Today, Garland remains as relevant to the design community as he was when he published his famous ‘First Things First’ manifesto in 1964. Throughout his life he retained a strong following among young designers and frequently lectured to large audiences, captivating them with his highly personal approach, outspoken views and even the occasional poem.

As a prolific writer and educator, Garland also produced five books on design, self-published books of his own photography and published many influential articles, including his first, ‘Structure and Substance’, in the Penrose Annual in 1960. In 2020, Garland was presented with the London Design Festival’s Lifetime Achievement Medal. He died, aged 92, in 2021.
